26 MarLoyola Jesuit Secondary School — A Very Busy Place!
To start up a really good secondary school in an area where students have very few chances to attend school is a real challenge! That surely is the challenge facing us in Kasungu, Malawi, as we opened Loyola Jesuit Secondary School in September 2015. Form One (Grade Nine) began with 61 girls and 62 boys, all boarders! Nice new buildings for classrooms, administration offices, girls and boys hostels, kitchen and dining facilities, assembly hall. Excited staff and teachers bringing experience in other schools. And good help from donors around Malawi and wider in our world making possible this wonderful educational effort to make a much-needed difference in Malawi.
As April 2016 brings the opening of the third term, we are already looking forward to the entry of Form Two this coming September. A lot more work needs to be done to be ready for that. We do have classroom and hostel space for another set of 120+ students. And the kitchen and dining facilities can take care of all the students. But we must provide housing for the new teachers that will be joining us. And that requires raising more funds to assure good living space to keep good teachers! We are urgently looking for funds for that in the days ahead…..
Something exciting that will be coming out of the ground in the months ahead is the construction of three new buildings that fulfill real needs on the LJSS campus. Our Chapel will provide a good worship space to deepen that faith that opens eyes, promotes community, commits to justice and supports maturity. A fully furnished Clinic will assure healthy students (and also offer some assistance to our neighbours). And the Jesuit Residence will provide lodging for a dedicated part of our staff. It will be exciting and encouraging to see these new buildings taking shape in the future.
